Document Summary

Protists, fungi, animals, and plants vs bacteria and archaea. All cells have a cell wall, a semifluid cytosol inside, chromosomes, and ribosomes eukaryotes dna is encased in the nucleus, bounded by a double membrane. Prokaryotes have a nucleoid nucleoid- unbounded concentration of dna cytoplasm- the space between the nucleus and the plasma membrane; organelles suspended within; membrane bound (eukaryotes) Prokaryotes; extremophiles (live in extreme environments: extreme halophiles- extremely salt environments, extreme thermophiles- extremely hot temperatures, methanogens- obligate anaerobes (have to be without o2); get energy by co2 + h2 ch4 (methane) + 2h2o + energy. Cells have a maximum size they can reach and still carry out metabolic requirments. As a cell increases in size, its surface area grows proportionately less than it"s volume. Only a limited amount of a particular substance can pass through the plasa membrane per second. The cell"s compartments provide different environments that support specific metabolic functions.
