BISC 1112 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Duodenum, Gastrin, Omnivore
Document Summary
Animals are heterotrophs- they must consumer other organisms to get energy. 03/22 animal nutrition: animal nutrition is the process of: Breaking it down into its chemical components. And absorbing these molecules into the body of the animal. 3 categories of animal feeding: 1) herbivores- eat mainly plants and algae, 2) carnivores- eat other animals, 3) omnivores- regularly consumer animals as well as plants or algae. Diet- an animals diet must provide: 1) chemical energy for cellular processes- energy from the food you eat is converted in mitochondria into atp. Cells use atp to power their chemical reactions. Organic carbon (sugar) and organic nitrogen (protein: 3) essential nutrients- materials that an animal cannot make form simpler organic molecules must be obtained from an animal"s diet. There are 4 classes: essential amino acid- animals need 20 amino acids to make proteins. Most animals have enzymes to make about half of these amino acids.
