Class 2 the modern individual begins to take form cont. There are two cities: one city is that of men, who live according to the flesh. Living as such is sinful, although flesh is not by nature evil. Carnal pleasures, such as immortality, uncleanness, licentiousness, drunkenness, carousing, etc. Idolatry, witchcrafts, enmity, contentions, jealousies, anger, quarrels, parties, envies: the other is of men who live according to spirit. Two societies have issued from two kinds of love: worldly society came from a selfish love. Boasts that it can get along by itself, maybe without god: the communion of saints is rooted in love for god. Nothing but the absolute being can satisfy human nature: result: the city of man remains in constant civil war, out of all the empires, two have emerged as surpassing the rest. The city of god: supreme good: eternal life, supreme evil: eternal death, virtue, prudence, justice, truth, the urge and appetite for action.
