Document Summary
November 1, 2016 intrastate conflict part one class twelve. Used as a synonym for intra-state conflict, civil war. Ethnic conflict is inherent in multi-ethnic societies. Can involved people/groups/governments in more than one state. Ethnic conflict does not have to be violent. Locus is primarily within the borders of a state: key actors, origins of the dispute, goals. Ethnic/secessionist, ideological/revolutionary, criminal assaults on state sovereignty, power struggles (civilian, military) Power struggles often disguised as ethnic conflicts then develop into them. Level of violence (1000 or more killed) Internal conflicts often spread and affect neighboring states. Neighboring states often intervene for self-serving reasons. External actors have own interests, can keep intra state conflicts going (arms, money), don"t have to suffer the costs of these conflicts. An example of no-fault history, analytically problematic, politically convenient. Structural factors: weak states, security concerns, ethnic geography. Economic/social factors: discriminatory economic systems, development and modernization, economic problems.
