IAFF 6138 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Melissa Farley, Moral Turpitude, World Health Organization
Document Summary
Siddarth kara looks at sex slavery from a business and economic perspective. Two major factor that contribute to a thriving sex slavery industry is high demand and high supply. On one side of the equation, we have to consider both the demand as well as the high elasticity of the demand for purchased sex. Even if we assume that a small percentage of the male population buys sex, the demand does not wane with the purchase of sex; in other words, it is something that can be purchased multiple times. A good news is that the elasticity means that raising the cost of purchasing or owning slaves will quickly diminish the demand. In other words, most moral awareness campaigns do very little in the fight against sex slavery. Instead, advertising campaigns could be used to fight for gender equality and respect for women as human beings in general.
