Document Summary

Films have a lot of power in shaping people"s perceptions of the world around them. In 1907, the scotus ruled that local govts could censor movies. In wwi, wilson asked hollywood for pro-american movies and again in wwii, fdr created. In the 1920s, the hays office (not govt affiliated) was established to censor all films. 1948, justice department required studios to give up major retail outlets, so they began focusing on intellectual property. 1990s, fcc abolished fin-syn rules and allowed studios and network to become vertically integrated. Govt ignored the dvd consortium, when sony and philips pooled their patent to determine what movies were put on dvd. Studios also have to have approval by the government, interest groups, and foreign countries in depicting stereotypes and other issues. Studios need these groups on their side for the success of their movie to get beneficial laws, like the digital millennium copyright act, passed. Many directors insert political messages into their films.
