Document Summary
Psychology 1001-12 class 5-chapter 2 & 3 (9-4-18) Neurons involved in reflex arc: afferent neuron, efferent neuron, interneuron: a connector neuron found within the central nervous system. Pons: (above the medulla) influences sleep, dreaming and arousal/coordinates movement between left and right side of the body. Reticular formation: (part of the hindbrain, runs through the medulla + pons) controls our general level of attention and arousal. Cerebellum: (part of the hindbrain, at the base/back of the brain) controls rapid movement, learned reflexes, posture, muscle tone and may be involved in in some cognitive/emotional functions. Medulla: (part of the hindbrain, bottom of the hindbrain) controls life-sustaining functions like breathing and swallowing. Thalamus: (part of the limbic system-center of the brain) sends sensory information to the proper areas of the cortex. Hypothalamus: (part of the limbic system-located below the thalamus) controls hunger, thirst, sexual behavior, sleeping, waking and emotions. Hippocampus: (part of the limbic system) responsible for the formation of long-term memories.
