Pakistan Super League (PSL) a step towards the right direction
The Pakistan Cricket Board organised the inaugural Pakistan Super League in
February 2016. The five teams that took part in this event represented the five major cities of
Pakistan namely Islamabad United, Karachi Kings, Quetta Gladiators, Peshawar Zalmi and
Lahore Qalandars. The Pakistan Super league was the first domestic cricket tournament in the
history of Pakistan Cricket that involved foreign players. The league was expected to provide the
local players with an opportunity to earn lucrative contracts simultaneously giving them the
exposure via training and playing alongside the world acclaimed superstars such as Chris Gayle,
Shane Watson, etc. The PSL also aimed to be to an outlet of earning for the Pakistan Cricket
Board, which had suffered significant losses; since the security situation in Pakistan no longer
made it a viable host for important events. The haphazard security situation meant Pakistan
would play their home series on the grounds of Sharjah and Dubai while bearing the high lease
costs of these grounds. Although the monetary aims of the PSL were mostly subdued since
tickets were seldom sold out, PSL can be considered a step in the right direction because the
local players got a chance to play along best players across the World, they also had the
opportunity to take guidance from the best coaches in the present day, this was also an
opportunity to escape the tight wage structure of First Class Cricket.

The draft system used at the PSL made sure that each team had a combination of
international players and local players including two upcoming homegrown talents. This made
sure that youngsters who had previously got a chance to showcase their talents to the National
teams Coaching staff and take the fast lane to the Pakistan National Team. Misbah Ul Haq, the
most successful test captain in Pakistan's history, also acknowledged the role of PSL in
developing young players by giving the example of current Indian captain Virat Kohli. "Already
you can see a lot of youngsters coming through and obviously it is good for the experienced
players also. You are getting more exposure and chances to enhance your skills and handling the
pressure. That's what IPL did for India BPL did for Bangladesh. I can clearly see that this is
going to help Pakistan cricket"(Ul Haq). The results of the PSL were immediately evident as
youngsters such as Khurram Manzoor, Khalid Latif and Mohammad Nawaz were incorporated in
the national Set-up following their exceptional performances in the Pakistan Super League. The
players performances had a lot more significance to them because they had come against top
notch opposition and commonplace critique against top performers of the previous domestic
competitions was invalid. The PSL successfully simulated the environment of international
cricket providing a far more accurate assessment of the players indirectly increasing the quality
of the national team as well.
The players also benefitted from the coaching expertise available to them. All
five teams hired qualified coaches which included Andy Flower, Dean Jones, Micky Arthur, etc.
Under the guidance of these coaches, the existing and emerging players were able to produce
performances unheard from them previously. Umar Akmal, Sharjeel Khan and Ahmad Shahzad
topped the batting charts while Wahab Riaz, Mohammad Nawaz and Mohammad Sami led the
bowling charts. The expertise of the coaches was instrumental in honing the skills of local
