Document Summary
Roman catholic church on one end, unaffiliated baptist church on other end. High vs. low church does not map theological differences that we discuss, but most puritans would fall into low-church. Arminian in the sense that they aren"t catholic. Atonement is not limited -- jesus died for everyone, not just the elect. Arminianism was a word with a stigma, so people that agreed with the teachings, would reject the word. Unitarians have distinct genesis in england and the us. In the us, they arise out of arminianism. Unitarians rejected the trinity and the doctrine of substitionary atonement. Scotland is presbytarian (idea is that there is an authority over the local church) Grace is unconditional -- once one has been chosen to be in the elect, that status cannot be removed. Based on grace of god with no strings attached (unconditionally) Wesley suggests that grace is free in the sense that it is offered to everybody (freely distributed)
