Stereotypes are tools that sometimes get terribly misused: why are they misused, they are inaccurate, they misestimate variability, they are unconscious and automatic. Both groups do bad acts and good acts (bad acts: spit on sidewalk, speeding in school zone, good acts: helping an elderly person, donating to charity) Group a does 33% bad acts and group b does 33% bad acts. There is high-intercategory variability (the peaks are far apart), and low- intracategory variability (sharp peaks) (case 1) But for height it is not useful wide peaks that overlap. Perception is case 1 usually, and reality is case 2: stimulus of lines. One of the sets of lines (length varied for each line pretty linearly) was uncategorized and the other was categorized, but the lines were the same.
