1950-1960"s china seen as the primary us enemy (agent of soviet communism) 1970"s: us and china develop quasi-alliance against the soviets. North wouldn"t have attacked the south unless mao supported the attack, so with stalin and mao"s approval, they carry out the attack. Even though knt had been pushed to island and taiwan, they were still committed to taking the mainland. Chinese pov going into war: testing mao"s model of international warfare. Us: test case, if the us didn"t show the maoist model to be unsuccessful then it would spread to other states in the region. Chinese circulated through several hundred thousand military troops. Us and china didn"t acknowledge the presence of chinese soldiers in. Us attempted to get out of war with nixon"s appointment to office. Which came with it improved relations with china. Also because of the soviet-china relationship, china was also interested in seeking to improve relations with the us.
