Description
Oct 10 – Structure of DNA Delbruck teacher of James Watson, thought that there was something else out  there that explained genetics Watson and Crick discovered structure of DNA DNA strand has directional polarity  ▯asymmetric, doesn’t mean partial charges Antiparallel strands   Hydrogen bond length between the nitrogenous bases is identical Watson discovered base pairing through matching cutouts Proteins are irregular because of irregular sequence of amino acids DNA embeds irregularity within regular structure  ▯irregular in the sense that base   pairs are irregular, each base pair is different, overall architecture, physical  structure of DNA is the same A:T and G:C base pairs result in identical diameter of helix   Rosalind Franklin used Xray diffraction “photo 51”   Maltese cross revealed helix, missing layer line revealed helix is double,  reflection revealed 3.4 angstrom spacing of base pairs   Despite repulsion from negative charge, double helix favored over singlestranded  DNA However, the bonding is very favorable   Hydrogen bonds not that important for stabili
