Document Summary

Living under a state system has its advantages and disadvantages. One receives protection, but at the same time, one is subject to laws one disagrees with. And then, of course, the state does have the power of life or death over its citizens the death penalty as well as the authority to compel a person to risk his or her life during war. Based on this week"s readings, compare the four main types of political organization, discuss how they structurally differ and weigh the advantages and disadvantages. The four main types of political organization are bands, tribes, chiefdoms, states. Bands are small foraging groups with flexible composition that migrates seasonally. As more complex political structures were formed, bands were unable to compete with these new, modern structures. Bands were found in desert and grassland areas with limited natural resources. Bands consist of about 25 to 50 people, normally families living together and cooperating in economic activities.
