Document Summary

A doll"s house vs the importance of being earnest. The victorian era was a period of time between 1837 and 1901 when people struggled with their identity because of the strict moral uphold of society. From the aristocracy to the working class, respectability was the topmost thought on people"s mind. Anyone not conforming to the rules dictated by society was ignored or judged. Women, especially, as they were seen as inferior to the male gender. Doll"s house and the importance of being earnest are clearly commenting on and criticizing these roles but they do so in very different and clever ways. Henrik ibsen takes an approach that is shocking and unexpected to the audience. Oscar wilde takes the approach of ridiculousness, commenting on these subjects through wit and satire. Throughout this essay i will discuss which play is more effective in getting their point across and why i believe this to be true.
