PSY 153 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Twin Study, Twin, Color Vision
Document Summary
Genotype - the complex blend of genetic material a person inherits, ex: inherit the gene for red hair. Phenotype the observable expression of the genotype, ex: you can see the red hair. Everything else that is not the genes, ex: religion, socioeconomic status. Ho(cid:449) the (cid:272)hild"s ge(cid:374)otype affe(cid:272)ts the phe(cid:374)otype contribute to it most of the time, however: Just because the child has a gene for a characteristic doesn"t mean they are going to develop it because environment affects too. Twin studies compare monozygotic twins and dizygotic twins. Adoption studies compare adoptive children to their biological parents and adoptive parents. If the child is more similar to biological parents, then blame genetic. If the child is more similar to adoptive parents, then blame environment. Compare monozygotic twins who were raised together vs. monozygotic twins who were raised apart. Babies come into the world with senses and we see how it develops.
