Document Summary

Divided attention: doing the same/similar task between 2 stumuli. Ex: paying attention to 2 different wide receivers as a quarterback. Dual task: never actually doing 2 things at one time. Switching between 2 different things quickly, but never actually doing it at the same time. Not processing the road and generating a conversation during a hands-free phone call in the car. Not noticing changes in a scene because you"re focusing on something else. Covert: not a body response, but internally shifting attention to stimulus. Checking out somebody walking down the street. Automated: brain doing the work for you; on auto-pilot. Moving your attention to what"s salient (obvious). Controlled: you"re putting effort into shifting/focusing your attention. Stroop test (effect): see if you"re able to control attention. When you shift attention, you"re enhancing processing of the neurons involved. Overtly or covertly, neurons are more excited. Alerting: being aware that something is going to happen.
