BIOL 101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Cell Theory, Scientific Method, Phospholipid

18 views2 pages

Document Summary

Cell theory all living things are made of cells; all cells come from preexisting cell; cells are the smallest unit that can function independently. The first step of scientific method is observation. Until we can observe the really small, we don"t know. Light microscopes can cell live cells in action. The resolution isnt as good as it could be. Electron microscopes give higher resolution but cells have to be held still or killed. Between the two we get a good picture of whats going on. With the high power microscopes we can see snapshot of proteins but we cant see individual atoms. All the organelles combine to give cell function. Cell membrane: mostly made of phospholipids, which are the lipids with fatty acid tails but polar phosphate head, so they create a barrier to keep external and internal environments separate and maintain homeostasis, bringing things in, keeping them out. Cytoplasm: internal fluid of cell that is mostly water.
