Document Summary

Outline: brief history of mendel- responsible for pioneering work in genetics, basic genetic terminology, monohybrid crosses. Looking at one gene: using genetics to predict offspring. The lengths some go to have red hair shows how rare it is. Its quite easy to notice unnatural red hair and compare it to natural red hair. People want red hair b/c its different and stands out. The question becomes why is red hair rare? . More overall melanin gives darker hair and less lighter. More eumelanin gives browner hair; more pheomelanin redder. Scientists studying mice found that a single gene (called. Mc1r) encoded a protein that allowed mice to have brown or black hair: -this protein when active causes there to be eumelanin and less pheomelanin. When this gene is mutated, the protein cant be made so theres less eumelanin and more pheomelanin. Later as this genome was being uncovered, scientists found this same gene in our genome- on chromosome.
