Youth is the consequence of the arrival of post-scarcity society. America became a post-scarcity society after wwii. Post-scarcity society = we produce more than we consume, and fewer people are need to produce what we need: there is more than enough for everyone to live comfortably. *** issues of hunger and homelessness are problems of distribution, not problems of production *** We need to continually encourage consumerism and waste to keep the economy strong: need for more consumers and for people to consume more. Gi bill after wwii professionalization and status competition (more jobs: professionalization more education before entering a profession, status competition children of wealthy typically had more school and the advantage in society. Forces more people to get more education: gi bill made it possible for veterans (and later their families) to get an education. Allowed people to go to college who otherwise would be unable to do so.
