Document Summary

The study of a complex subject begins with a careful definition of ideas and concepts and organization of the facts: observations, measurements, etc. A fundamental objective of chemistry is the rational understanding of the process by which matter undergoes change. All samples of matter are described by a setof characteristics called properties, which fall into two general categories: chemical properties and physical properties. A chemical property is any characteristic that involves chemical change. A physical property is any characteristic that does not involves chemical change;; it may involve physical change. All the changes observed in matter can be classified in two general categories. A chemical change is any change in matter that involves a change in the identity (the combined chemical and physical properties) of the matter. A physical change is any change in matter that does not involve a change in identity.
