PREPARING TO PARTICIPATE
Chapter 5: Choosing Topics
5.1
Knowledge
Name the three things to consider when selecting a topic for any presentation.
Describe two ways to generate ideas for a topic.
Three things to consider when selecting a topic for a presentation are:
1. Yourself/attitude
a. During this consideration, one would need to maintain their excitement or
nervousness. It helps to feel passionate about a certain topic and do well
than hating a topic and half-assing it. Someone would probably be very
passionate about their major, future job, hobbies, vacations spots, pretty
much anything that draws in their attention.
2. Your Audience
a. One would also need to take into consideration about how the audience
will feel about your topic. They would need to relate their
interests/attitudes to your topic. Asking your classmates who will be your
audience is also a good idea once you generate ideas of what your topic
could be
3. Your occasion
a. For this, you need to take into consideration, how much time is available
to you to present. Also the time given to you to prepare. You will also be
given requirements for your presentation so those need to be included in
your decision on what topic you should do. The time at which you present
can also be a good topic choice. The books example was given a speech in
October and having the topic be on Halloween.
Two ways to generate ideas for a topic can be through brainstorming and personal
inventory. Brainstorming is when you give yourself a time limit to come up with as
many ideas as possible that you would be interested in. This is linked with personal
inventory. Personal inventory is a way to organize your thoughts. This could mean
grouping your brainstormed ideas into categories like people, places, social issues, etc.
This can help you create background topics on your main topic. For example, if I
brainstormed the ideas, Disney World, Amusement Parks, Water Parks, Restaurants, etc.,
I could use Disney World as my main topic and use the other ones to back up my
thoughts of why Disney World is the happiest place on Earth.
