1. A few terms to know
a. Collectivist
a.i. Group/family oriented
a.ii. Focus on family goals (do things to help family; get a good job to help
family, etc.)
a.iii. Also, family will work together to help members (may pool money to pay
for college, and the college-educated will help family)
a.iv. May introduce self in terms of group role (“I am John’s son.”)
a.v. Likely to talk about family accomplishments (“My sister is a doctor.”)
b. Individualist
b.i. Individual oriented
b.ii. Focus on meeting individual goals, doing things for self (get a good job to
buy things you want)
b.iii. May introduce self in terms of individual traits (“I am a student, smart,
etc.”)
b.iv. Likely to talk about own accomplishments (“I was valedictorian in high
school.”)
b.v. This is the dominant value of Anglo-Europeans in U.S.
2. African American Families
a. Values
a.i. Strong Kinship Bonds -
a.i.1. Collective orientation
a.i.2. Broad definition of family
a.i.2.a. Fictive kin (not blood related, but considered
family)
a.i.2.b. Informal adoption & foster parenting
a.i.2.b.i. Assist family members & fictive kin during times of
stress, etc.
a.i.2.b.ii. Do not receive government assistance since it is
not formal arrangement
a.i.3. Strong ties & sense of obligation to kin (see p. 132)
a.i.4. Extended family households common (more than one
generation living together)

mainland and the island, particularly those in the military (and
they are free to do this as they are U.S. citizens)
a.iv. Higher unemployment & poverty rates than other Hispanic groups. Why?

a.v. High percentage of children born to unmarried mothers (but, many living
in consensual unions – p. 139)
b. Cuban origin families
b.i. First waves of Cuban immigrants were -
b.i.1. Lighter skinned (more white)
b.i.2. Fleeing Castro’s government (as political refugees)
b.i.3. Mostly middle & upper socioeconomic status
b.i.3.a. U.S. govt actually gave business loans in order to
lure immigrants away from Castro’s Cuba
b.i.4. More educated than later waves of immigrants
b.i.5. Likely to choose to reside in immigrant enclaves – tended
to live in Miami in Cuban neighborhoods
