GEO 102 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Silicate Minerals, Clastic Rock, Particle Size
Document Summary
Form in bands and tell us something about the earth at that time. These are the rocks that supply all the energy sources. Sediments - unconsolidated particles created by: the weathering of rock, the secretions of organisms or decomposition of organic matter, chemical precipitation. #5 is the most important step of being a sedimentary rock. As the water moves thru the sediment, it has the dissolved ions in water and will leave behind those ions as a precipitate. As you put more material on top, you get more layers on top, may be thick to begin with but over time as you put more on top and add weight, it will collapse and be consolidated and compaction. Will become one unit, makes it more solid. Not one specific model for sediment rock formation. Moves down slope, and the particle size and shape changes. Becomes smaller and more rounded and very fine grained.
