Democracy has a variety of meanings, depending on the area of the world & the era of its use. Almost all nations of the world claim to practice democracy. Ex: north korea is named the democratic" people"s republic of korea . A number of governments claiming to be or titled democracies are not. They say that they are democratic because their policies & structures reflect the interests of the people even though they don"t hold elections. Because gov"t is deciding what the interests of the people are. 1) recognition of the dignity of the individual every man is entitles to life, liberty, and property. John locke tells us that liberty is granted to us by natural law rather than by human law. Men are born w/ natural rights that are inherent to our humanity life, liberty, property. No government should be able to take these rights away. Thomas jefferson included these ideas in the declaration of independence.
