Anxiety
- Reality
ego: real life
Anxiety is fear of real world events
Cause of this is usually easily identified
- Neurotic
I'd: animal behavior
Comes from unconscious fear that the basic impulses of ID will take control of the
person, leading to eventual punishment
- Moral
Superego: values, guilt
Anxiety involves a fear of violating our superego principles, and appears as feelings
of guilt
The Ego Defense Mechanisms
- Repression
Blocking anxiety provoking thought from mind (temporary)
- Projection
Cannot accept feeling so project that feeling onto others
- Reaction formation
Show the opposite of how you really feel
- Regression
Revert to earlier stages of development due to stress
