Document Summary

British empire in north america quickly falls apart, partly due to king george iii being insecure and mentally ill (also very young began ruling at age 22) Passed quartering act: colonists must feed and house british troops. Allowed colonists to harass natives within their indian reserve (revenge for their alliance with the french) Continued to practice mercantilism (still enforced navigation acts) Needed money to cover costs of french/indian war, and troops in north america. Restrictions on colonial manufacture of wool, hats and iron (potential competition?) Any violators had trial heard by british judges, not colonial peers. New type of tax (first version of sales tax) Tax on every printed document in the colonies (colonists liked to read) Stamp act had a very bad reaction: boycotts, petitions, violence, protests and attacks on british officials. They shared resentment toward britain, formed a stamp act congress (9 representatives from different colonies met for the first time).
