AN S 331 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Pyometra, Hydrosalpinx, Endometritis
Document Summary
Note: 9 banded armadillo always gives birth to genetically identical quadruplets. Endometritis - swelling of the inner uterine lining cells. Growth of endometrial cells outside of the uterus. Pyometra - pus (an accumulation of dead cells) formation in the oviduct. Abscess - filled with more of an infectious fluid due to the body"s attempt to get rid of a previous infection at the site. Hydrosalpinx- an abnormal amount of fluid accumulating in the oviduct. Serosa and muscularis- that doesn"t really impact fertility. To concentrate capacitated sperm in the peri-estrus period. Capacitation: the process in which the female reproductive organ activates and capacitated sperms (i. e. the gate keeper of the oviduct) Prevents sperm, bacteria, etc. from entering the oviduct at wrong times. Example of the pig: 1 way valve- very rigid entrance to the oviduct. Interesting phenomenon: mare retains unfertilized ova in oviduct. Ufo"s do not pass into the uterus as in most species.
