Document Summary
Introduction to psychological theories: many people view things from an individual-level perspective, persons with individual flaws, may use the flaw to explain their participation in deviant, antisocial, or delinquent conduct. Psychological theories: individual defects lie at the heart of delinquency, psychologists disagree on why many delinquent youths are mentally disturbed and why these disturbances result in negative behaviors, two distinct approaches to answering this question: Personality - a set of characteristics that describe a person"s beliefs, motivations, and behaviors. Psychopathology - a set of behaviors and attitudes that show clinical evidence of psychological impairment. Psychodynamic theory: refers to the unconscious mental processes that develop early in childhood and control our personalities. Superego - moral code, conscience, norms, and values: pioneered by sigmund freud, oedipus complex. Behavioral theory: proposes that behavior reflects a person"s interactions with others throughout his or her lifetime.
