Being mortal: medicine and what matters in the end, by atul gawande, is a personal meditation on how we can better live with age-related frailty, serious illness and approaching death. Gawande"s novel is split up into eight different chapters that focus on different aspects of the death. This novel especially examines how medical professionals are the ones who largely control how we spend our last days. From reading this novel i discovered that unfortunately, sometimes these professionals are focused on disease instead of living. In the middle of the book, gawande explores the concepts of end-of-life medicine, where he examines the different models of living. From gawande"s point of view, he promotes hospice as a model of care. These two chapters things fall apart and letting go , are surrounded by stories of his own personal experiences with his family. During the semester, we discussed the differences between the principles of hospice and palliative care.
