Parental warmth: how affectionate and involved a parent it. More warm parents tend to have children who are secure, happy and better behaved. Parental control: how controlling and demanding a parent is. Parenting styles - combination of warmth and control. Indulgent style: high warmth and low control. Rejecting style: low warmth and low control. Authoritarian style: low warmth and high control. No explanation or discussion for rules and consequences. Use of forceful, punitive methods to curve behavior. No much teaching happens because there"s so explanation or discussion. Want to be told what to do. Linked to substance abuse in adolescence and early adulthood. Once they have some freedom they run with it. The style is only effective as long as the child believes they can be controlled. Nonpunitive, accepting of child"s desire and behaviors. Child is a part of policy decisions. Let natural consequences occur instead of artificial ones. Does not deal with inconvenient parts of parenting.
