We perceive ourselves as more or less masculine or feminine in how we think and in how we behave. Different than gender identity, sex, or sexual orientation. High in both masculine and feminine characteristics. Masculine and androgynous tend to have the highest self esteem. How do little girls know they are more like their mom than their dad and vise versa. The idea that we develop our sex roles by first acquiring an understanding of gender constancy. Gender labeling - starts in early preschool years. When kids can correctly label their own gender. Understanding that when their appearance change, their genders do not. 3 year olds believe sex can just change. The understanding that if you are a boy now, you will be a boy when you grow up. But they still believe that gender can change by changing appearance.
