SOC 134 Lecture Notes - Lecture 26: Truancy, Labeling Theory, Pointless
Document Summary
The image we have of random crimes suggest that it is: patternless happen to anyone, pointless criminal motives make no sense. But none of these claims are true. Crime is not random, stratified by gender, race, class, age, and other factors. Crime has been declining over the past decade. Why some people labeled as deviant and what are effects of label. Society constructs deviants by applying labels to people. Labeling theory focuses on the application of deviant labels and the effects of that labeling. Two types of deviance: primary deviance = routine instances of norm violation that may or may not result in labeling, secondary deviance = deviance following and resulting from the label. Reasons why label may lead to deviance : cut off from participation in conventional groups, treatment may produce increasing deviance, labeled person may believe the label. Shows importance of labeling for understanding deviance and told of class in assigning labels.
