Iclicker: garland describes three ways of thinking about punishment. Iclicker: executing scott peterson, who was convicted of murdering his pregnant wife, is the right thing to do; he deserves to die. What kind of explanation for punishment is this: philosophical (right thing to do, deserving; what is fair and what is just) Iclciker: 156$ traffic fines for texting while driving make the highway safer, by making drivers afraid to text, lest they have to pay a fine if and when they are caught. What kind of an explanation for a punitive fine is this: penological. Iclicker: today executions take place not in public squares, but behind closed doors, because the focus has shifted from punishing the body to controlling the mind.
