How does discipline get rationalized: going from these contract workers where everyone owns their weapon to where the government owns all the weapons. A simple way of picturing the difference between the integration of the individual within a complex society and within a less complex one is to think of their different road systems. In a simple society, people are scared of lack of institutions and more complex society, we are scared of people not following the rules. As society gets more complex, we are able to function because most people follow the law. Weber: society is more disciplined: charismatic power hardens lasting institutions. Elias individuals are more disciplined: civilization produces self-constraint. Dominant thing happening today in terms of punishment. 1990s rate of incarceration are increasing: major social change and want to know what is going on. Big picture: go from moments of charismatic change of bureaucratization and how do we apply this to punishment; punishment becomes more rationalized.
