Leading is the process of inspiring others to work hard to accomplish important tasks. How do leader inspire others: by understanding what motivates employees. What is motivation: forces within the individual that account for the level, direction and persistence of effort expended at work. Content theories of motivation help us to understand human needs. The what of motivation: maslows hierarchy of needs, mcgregor"s theory x and y, herzberg"s two factor theory, mcclland and others three need theory. Process theories of motivation offer additional insights into how people give meaning to rewards. The how of motivation: goal setting theory, reinforcement theory, job design theory, expectancy theory, equity theory. Needs: the unfulfilled physiological or psychological desires of an individual. All people have needs - they engage in behaviours to obtain extrinsic and intrinsic reward to satisfy these needs. Needs cause tensions that influence attitudes and behaviours. Do not provide a complete understanding of motivation. Believes there are two types of employees.
