Document Summary

Philosophy looks at the most fundamental underlying principles. Hobbs seeks truth in the nature of man. We are all essentially like machines, driven by aversion and desires. Hobbs says don"t slip into his assumptions, your own assumptions. Nothing could be worse than utter chaos, but that is the nature of man. Hobbs speaks of society as artificial, not natural, has to be forced and constrained. Hobbs says you never really get true society, but you can get to a place where our arrangements are social. For hobbs, reason is calculated, how do i get what i get and not get what i don"t want, balancing pleasure and pain. Some people get together and decide to stop doing the bad things, stop doing the things to others that we hate being done to us, create positive laws. ^this is the beginning of a society. Something may seem altruistic, but acting favorably is ultimately for the benefit of yourself.
