Dopamine hypothesis: hyperactive dopaminergic signal transduction; dopamine overabundance. Brain development, synaptic transmission, immune functioning, manufacturing of important proteins involved in neurotransmissions. Neurodevelopmental hypothesis- a disruption of brain development during early life underlies the later emergence of psychosis during adulthood. Atypical or second generation (newer, created in 1990"s) (clozapine) Extrapyramidal symptoms (eps)- tremors, paranoia, anxiety, etc. Brains become less activated when given a social cognition task. Faulty modes of behavior and communication, cognitive distortions, and high degree of expressed emotion. Associated with environmental stressors of poverty and contracting the disease leads to social and economic downward drift . Assertive community treatment (act)- a team of professionals from psychiatry, psychology, nursing, and social work reach out to clients. Theories focus on underlying brain mechanisms as expressed in cognitive deficits. Individuals with these disorders receive integrated care to maximizing their chances of recovery. 25-33% in community samples and up to 10% in inpatient. Bipolar 1 will eventually develop into bipolar 2 over time.
