Document Summary

Retina-geniculate-striate system: starts at the retina, continues through lateral geniculate nucleus, finishes in primary visual cortex (v1 and v2) Contralateral processing occurs in that things seen in the right visual field of the right eye are processed on the left side of the brain. Might locate things in space and time. Object attributes occur in unpredictable combinations; color does not predict the object. The required processing differs across attributes; space and time are important for processing. Receptive field- the region of the retina in which light influences the activity of a particular neuron. V1 and v2 are involved at an early stage of visual processing. Contains different groups of cells that respond to color and form. V4 respond to color as well as line orientation. Achromatopsia- a condition involving brain damage and little or no color perception. People with achromatopsia and monkeys with v4 lesions can still see some color. Akinetopsia- motion perception is severely impaired due to brain damage.
