Child development: area of study devoted to understanding change from children from birth to adolescence. (part of a larger field. ) Cognitive: mental, problem solving, attention, memory, imagination, language, academic. Emotional and social: communication, self-understanding, relationships, behavior. (harder to gauge compared to the other two. ) These are not necessarily distinct from each other. There are 5 different periods that develop these changes: Most rapid time of change, one cell is transformed to a human body. Infancy to toddler hood: birth to 2 years. First intimate ties are made to others. (daycare, Motor skills, perceptual abilities and intellectual capacities grow. Middle childhood: 6 years to 11 years. New responsibilities, athletic abilities, awkwardness, morality and friendships develop. Puberty hits, schooling becomes tougher, preparation for adult life begins. Emerging adulthood: not fully assuming adult roles yet, time of exploration for love, career and personal values. Children are continuously developing, there are no stops or starts, bell-curve .
