There is a dissonance between what sociologists see and what the public believes: the public believes that socio-economic status is more about the american dream than sociology, you"re in control of your own destiny. In sociology, the group is the fundamental unit of analysis: outcomes are not the root of individuals making choices, groups define whether or not you have certain successes. Sociologists challenge the things that unite the group: maybe that"s why their theories are so easy to reject by the group. People then see sociology as out-of-touch or wrong. This class is a form of public sociology.
