Document Summary

The sky appears as a dome, with stars on the surface, this is called the celestial sphere. Zenith-the top of the dome that is directly overhead. Horizon-where the dome appears to meet the earth. The stars, the sun, and the moon rise in the east and set in the west. The dome of the sky appears to be moving. Objects in the sky appear to be at the same distance. Celestial poles-imaginary extensions of the earth"s poles to the celestial sphere. Celestial equator-imaginary extension of the earth"s equator projected on the celestial sphere. Polaris-a star located closest to the north celestial pole, the "north star" The sky is divided into 88 regions around identifiable star patterns, called constellations. Based on perspective, the stars in the constellations are very far from each other. 13 constellations that mimic the path of the sun. The path that the sun follows is called ecliptic. Planets move along the ecliptic much like the zodiac constellations.
