CHEM-C 127 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Pythagorean Theorem, Cubic Crystal System, Coordination Number
Lab lecture: Crystalline Structure
Crystalline structures are characterized by a repeating arrangement of atoms.
• very commonly observed in atoms, ions, and molecules.
• Understanding the structure of ions, atoms, and molecules can reveal a great deal about
their physical properties
• Understanding the physical properties of such phenomenon can be useful for many
applications
o such as predicting reactivity
o developing better building materials
o applying it to advancing technology, etc.
• This lab focuses on the cubic lattice structure
o has sides of equal length
o only 90 degree angles.
o analyzes the structure of 3 types of cubic unit cells
o primitive cubic unit cells
o face centered cubic unit cells
o body centered cubic unit cells.
• By creating a large model of each of the cubic unit cells
o the properties of atom position
o number of atoms in each unit cell
o the relationship between size of atoms
o size of unit cell
o coordination number
o packing efficiency
