COLL-C 104 Lecture 13: C104 Lecture 13 Notes (Feb. 22)
Document Summary
Russian sinji vs. goluboj (different shades of blue) and english green vs. blue. Can much more easily identify shapes (1) the fruit fantasy. Discusses machine that can manipulate tastes like we can manipulate different colors artificially. Has dial that allows movement along a spectrum of fruits. Something could be between peach and watermelon. We would still describe the taste as being a combination of those 2 fruits; no particular word for taste combinations. Can be, but mostly not, because tastes are more discrete and we can"t des(cid:272)(cid:396)i(cid:271)e combinations of them like we often can with colors (cid:894)(cid:1006)(cid:895) (cid:862)real(cid:863) e(cid:454)pe(cid:396)i(cid:373)e(cid:374)ts to be discussed next. Recall: variation of color terminology is not a matter of biological differences in our eyes or brains. Something to do with sensitivity to different wavelengths/frequencies, the 3 kinds of cones in. It is a complex interplay between nature (eyes and brain) and culture our eyes, and the way our brains process what we see.
