Peripheral nervous system is composed of 2 parts: Excitation of skeletal muscle motor to produce conscious, voluntary movements. Autonomic nervous system (regulated by hypothalamus and brain stem) Activation of this system will be discussed a great deal involuntary control of smooth muscle, cardiac muscle or glandular secretion. Sympathetic ( fight or flight : prepares body for emergencies. Parasympathetic ( rest & digest : calms the body down. We will begin with studying the brain. Activating the brain (stimulating electrically or chemically) Shutting off part of the brain (lesioning, electromagnetic) Phineas gage 1848 damage to the cerebral cortex. Electrical activity in the brain recorded, can show active areas of the brain. Denser tissue blocks rays, creating the image in light/dark contrast. Radioactive material attached to glucose or oxygen shows brain activity. More active areas take up more radioactive dye. Magnetic resonance imaging (mri) 2003 nobel prize medicine. Can"t be used with patients with metal in them.
