Document Summary
When we see triangle and not pac man: top down process. We see triangles & circles often but not pacman often. Box is interpreted floating on top of circles: top down because using knowledge of what normally occurs to infer existence of box. Stimulus is impoverished so we sconstruct picture of world based on stimulus--what is most likely to have produced it. Ambiguity of retinal image: infitnite # of squares in real world can result in image, visual system must determine which possibility is really out there. Stimulus is rich & has all information needed for verdical perception of world. Can find invariant cues to actual state of affairs in real world in the retinal image(no need to infer) Would arge that abiguous image is rare & person would bmove. & would disambiguate stimulus (others) argue that it can be veiwed in 2 wats so we need to bring more info to supplement impoverished image.
