Sanskrit plays were translated and published in west. Educated in the west and becomes fascinated with indian culture. Writes in english and becomes world-renowned for his plays and poems. First asian person to get a nobel prize for literature 1913. Post office (1912) escaping pain and suffering through spiritualism and imagination. 19th century combination of northern and southern forms (beijing opera) Shut everything down, create a party line for all culture. New adaptations of beijing opera in 1950s and early 1960s. Traditional opera killed, the red detachment of women. Directed death of a salesman in beijing with all-chinese cast (1983) Outside one which remains outside at a shinto shrine in kyoto. Outside one (national theatre) in tokyo now preserved inside larger building. Founded by women (okuni 1603) but all male by 1629. Stage revolve invented by japanese and then stolen by the germans. Many elements of both japanese & chinese traditional theater. Goes to get an education and comes back.
