Procession led to a center where a sacrifice was made. Often the chorus exited dancing wildly at end. Thesmophoriazusae (411 bce) and ecclesiazusae (c. 392 bce) Comic slaves and old men wore grotesque costumes. Comic masks would often exaggerate things like baldness or ugliness. The first has the agon, or the debate. Dramatic activists were not officially recognized until 442. Contests were at first only for comic dramatists and actors. Based in dithyrambs: lyric hymns in praise of the god dionysus. Choral performances continued to dominate the early plays until aeschylus added a second actor and reduced the chorus from 50 to 12 performers. Sophocles, who added a third actor, increased the chorus to 15 but reduced it to a mainly commentarial role in most of his plays.
