Finding information on policing jobs: departments usually don"t have to advertise, media, internet, word of mouth, department websites, current and retired officers recommend people, internships. Characteristics of a good officer: personality consistent with community expectations, maturity and life experiences, emotional intelligence and stability, ability to communicate, ethical standards and integrity. Will cost the department money in the long run: must be between the ages of 21 and 35, with some exceptions. Most agencies value older, more mature and experienced recruits. Education requirements: at least a high school diploma or ged, higher education is always better, many believe that educated officers make better officers, educated officers are better with community policing, the public expects up-to-date, better educated officers. Criminal records: no felonies, misdemeanors aren"t an automatic disqualification, but they are frowned upon, domestic violence charges are a disqualifier, all past criminal activity is explored. Nypd: 86,000 applicants in the past five years, 12,318 have been hired in the past five years.
