Psychology- a discipline concerned which behavior and mental process and how they are affected by an organism"s physical state, mental state, and external environment. Memories can"t be repressed, and recalled back in perfect detail. Policies of abstinence from alcohol does not reduce rates of alcoholism. Empirical- evidence gathered by careful observation, experimentation and measurement. Wilhelm wundt (1878) found the first psychological laboratory (structuralism). Structuralism- an early psychological approach that emphasized the analysis of immediate experience into basic elements. Functionalism- an early psychological approach that emphasized the function or purpose of behavior and consciousness. Idealism- image in the head, believes the world can be studied. Solution- logical empiricism (available to our five senses). Scientific claims must be consistent with each other (logical). Cognitive perspective-thinking/what goes on in your brain. Psychodynamic perspective- subconscious/ unconscious controls behavior (uncontrollable). Humanistic/humanist- free will, humans control action, humans are at their good.
