BIO 114 Lecture 16: LECTURE 16 - STUDENT NOTES (1)
Document Summary
Protists: 200,000+ species, eukaryotic, unicellular and multicellular, nonmotile and motile, aquatic and terrestrial, autotrophic (photosynthetic) and heterotrophic. Protists have no unique synapomorphies that distinguish them from the non-protist eukaryotes! Protists are not a monophyletic group, as they contain a common ancestor and some, but not all descendants groups. Carbon fixation by diatoms and other photosynthetic protists accounts for over half of all carbon fixed. Protists form the base of the aquatic food pyramid. In the 1870"s, it was accidentally introduced into france and nearly destroyed the grape and wine industries. A professor from the university of bordeaux noted that leaves with copper sulfate and lime were healthy. He prepared a chemical substance that was the first foliar fungicide used in the control of plant disease. Phytophthora: members of this genus cause diseases in avocados, onions, tomatoes, strawberries, apples, and many other plants.
